Pathfinder Challenge Rules and Regulations.
The Rules and Regulations are modified for each race location and are adapted for the disciplines of that particular race.
The following information outlines some of the key components of The Pathfinder Challenge Rules for 2002.
OVERVIEW
The competitors must possess a wide variety of outdoor skills including expert navigation and technical skills associated with each locations race disciplines.
Depending on location , the race takes between 24 hours and 3 days to complete. Teams leave the starting line and navigate through mandatory checkpoints to the finish line. The first complete team to cross the finish line is the winner.
DISCLIPLINES
Disciplines will vary annually depending on each race location. Trekking, orienteering/land navigation, mountain biking, canoeing/kayaking, whitewater rafting, fixed ropes, and horseback riding are some of the skills in which competitors will require proficiency in order to successfully complete these events. Teams will be required to prove competency level through testing
at race registration.
ENVIRONMENTAL RULES
Pathfinder Challenge practices “Minimum Impact” camping standards, trail etiquette and wildlife preservation implemented NPS and State Park Rules and Regulations.
MANDATORY EQUPMENT
Each race will require slightly
different in its equipment list. The exact list will be provided to each racer or team captain during the updates and through the registration process.
Listed below are examples of personal and team mandatory equipment:
MANDATORY PERSONAL EQUIPMENT
-Survival Mirror
-Survival-Space Blanket
-Compass
-Lighter
-Knife with locking or fixed blade
-Whistle
-First-aid kit
MANDATORY RAFTING/CANOE/KAYAK EQUIPMENT
-Life jacket suitable for canoeing/rafting which meets the indicated buoyancy standards.
-Helmet with chin strap
-A paddle
-Glow sticks / Chemlights
-Outfitter grade throw bags
MANDATORY FIXED-ROPES EQUIPMENT
-Seat Harness
-Climbing helmet with chin strap
-Three daisy chains or slings (two feet long)
-Pair of leather gloves
-Four locking carabiners
-One descender
-One short 7mm prusik (150cm long knotted)
MANDATORY MOUNTAIN BIKING
EQUIPMENT
-Light mounted on front of bike
-Flashing red light mounted and visible to the rear
-A properly rated bike helmet
MANDATORY HORSEBACK RIDING EQUIPMENT
-A hoof pick
-A helmet
FORBIDDEN EQUIPMENT
-Weapons
-Any mode of transport other than natural or those supplied by race organizers
-GPS
-Knight vision equipment
-Any maps other than those provided but the event organizers
